Today I’m sharing my Sézane Clyde Trench Coat Review.
I am SO excited to share this review. I have been drooling over this trench coat since Sézane launched it a couple of years ago and finally decided to treat myself this winter.
There is nothing more chic, in my opinion, than a trench coat. They are relentlessly timeless, ultra practical, and have the ability to elevate even the most basic of outfits.
The Clyde Trench is one of Sézane’s bestsellers and part of the Top 30 French Heroes collection which features their most iconic, classic styles that they bring back season after season.

ToggleSézane really knocks it out of the park with their staples, and the Clyde trench coat is no exception. This will be an integral piece of my wardrobe for years to come.
In this Sézane Clyde trench coat review, I’ll share all of the details and specifications about the coat and how it compares to Sézane’s other bestselling trench coat (the Scott), and my overall review and thoughts on sizing, fit, etc. As always, I’ll share some outfit inspo throughout the post.
Before I get into my review of the Sézane Clyde trench coat, it’s worth mentioning that Sézane carries two long trench coats. The Scott holds the silhouette of a traditional trench: button details, raglan sleeves, and a waist tie. The Clyde, the coat I have and will be reviewing today, has a more modern, oversized silhouette and does not include a waist tie.
I debated between the two–they are both stunning, after all–and ended up going with the Clyde because its design felt just extra special and unique. I am a sucker for an oversized coat and love how this one falls and drapes effortlessly. And living in San Diego, I don’t really need a waist tie to bundle up with. I will almost always wear this trench open which I think the Clyde is perfect for. And the real kicker for me was the checked lining. It is SO cute and adds such a fun element to every outfit.
One thing I’ll say: this coat is OVERSIZED, and it does not have much shape. If you are worried about drowning in its shapelessness–something that doesn’t scare me but is definitely understandable–I would consider the more classic Scott.
Where do I begin? The Clyde trench is, as stated above, oversized and drapey. There is no waist tie or cinching at the waist whatsoever. I love how this looks: effortless and boyish and chic.
The coat has this massive almost Peter Pan-esque collar which makes it unlike any other trench I’ve seen. And, perhaps my favorite detail of all, the Clyde trench has a ridiculously fun checked lining that shows as you move or if you cuff the sleeves. It reminds me of a more playful version of the Burberry trench. SO CUTE.
The coat has buttons all the way down the front and a small slit in the middle of the back.
The exterior/main fabric of the Sézane Clyde trench is made of 100% organic cotton. The lining is made of 60% organic cotton and 40% recycled polyester.
The exterior fabric is a thick twill that is both soft to the touch and sturdy. The material is amazing quality and super durable–I can tell that I won’t need to be too precious with it. The exterior is marketed as water-repellent although I have yet to wear it in the rain.
The Clyde trench coat is made in Bulgaria, with its materials sourced from Turkey.
I wasn’t expecting the Clyde trench coat to be as warm as it is. I wore this out to dinner with a thick cotton sweater the other night and was perfectly warm (it was in the low 50s, so take that with a grain of salt).
And while I don’t think this trench coat wouldn’t be warm enough for winter in a cold climate, it IS the perfect layer for fall and spring transitional weather. There is, after all, nothing more fun than throwing on a trench over a floral dress and sneakers in the spring.
The Clyde trench is currently available in 7 colorways: Light Beige (this is the color I have!), Camel, Light Khaki, Dark Khaki, Black, and Ecru, Choco (this one has leopard lining!), and a super fun Brown/Ecru Gingham.
Sézane’s website suggests dry cleaning to keep the coat in the most pristine condition. I typically steer clear of dry clean only but am fine with it for a piece of outerwear that I will (hopefully) not have to wash very often.
I did give the coat a quick steam when I pulled it out of the box, but it has remained fairly unwrinkled since then.
Sézane’s Clyde trench coat costs $350 USD. The price point definitely makes the purchase an investment, but I foresee myself wearing this for years on end and am always fine with paying more for good quality.
After a little research, I found that Sézane’s price point lines up with trench coats from similar brands: Reformation, J. Crew, and Madewell.
Sézane grants free shipping to orders over $200.
*I always like to remind people that the prices in Europe are much better than ordering online or at the stores here in the US, so if you have a trip planned this year, leave some extra room in your suitcase!
I can’t overstate how oversized the fit of the Clyde trench coat is. You can see in the photos how long it is (for reference, I am 5’9”). Even outside of the length, it is just a lot of material. I went with my usual size for Sézane (US 6/38) because I wanted to wear it comfortably over big sweaters and such, but, even still, I could have definitely sized down.
Overall, I have been SO happy with this purchase. The quality is really incredible, and the design details, like the collar and checked lining, make this coat stand out from other trench coats on the market. It is unbelievably easy to wear, the type of second layer that levels up even the most boring of everyday mom looks.
Above all else, this trench coat’s versatility is unmatched. It is the perfect second layer for cool fall days and foggy spring mornings.
You can see throughout this post that I have worn this trench coat over almost every imaginable outfit: with a silk skirt and black boots, over lounge pants and a baggy sweater, and with jeans and sneakers.
