Today I’m sharing my Sézane Gaspard cardigan review.
I have been eyeing Sézane’s Gaspard cardigan for a few years but could never quite settle on a color. The Gaspard is one of Sézane’s bestsellers and part of their Top 30 French Heroes collection.
When Sézane launched this vibrant green earlier this year, I knew immediately this was the one.
In this Sézane Gaspard cardigan review, I’m going to share all of the details on this cardigan and share my honest thoughts on if it’s “worth it” or not. At the end of the post, I’ll share a bunch of ways to wear it and outfit ideas.
**Sézane just launched their fall 2024 line, and I’m in love! Here are a few of my favorites so far:

ToggleThis cardigan is even more beautiful in person. The mother-of-pearl buttons and fine knit of the material make this sweater such a treasure. This reminds me of something my grandmother would wear–in the absolute best way. It is elegant and sophisticated and, I’m happy to report, SO much fun to style.
This sleek, elegant cardigan has clean lines and gorgeous mother-of-pearl buttons that stand out beautifully against the fabric of the sweater. The buttons have beautiful ribbon backing (I’ve noticed many of Sézane’s sweaters have this detail). Up close, you can see that the knit is ribbed.
The cardigan has a subtle boat neck, making this a style that can be worn closed, partially open, or all the way open. The sweater can be layered over a thin shirt or worn alone. You can also wear this sweater backwards, leaving an elegant button detail down the back.
The Sézane Gaspard cardigan is made of 37% Super kid mohair, 37% Baby Alpaca, and 26% Polyamide. The result is a super fine, thin fabric that is perfect for cooler weather.
Sézane’s Gaspard cardigan is made in Italy.
Honestly, it depends on who you ask. This is a natural fabric which tends to be a bit itchier for those with sensitive skin. I read a Reddit thread specifically asking about the itchiness of this cardigan before I ordered it, and it seemed like the answers were a 50/50 split.
Personally, I am fine with this sweater as long as I am wearing a tank or t-shirt underneath. Even if I’m wearing it buttoned all the way up as a standalone top, I’ll still wear a tank top underneath because my torso and chest are the most sensitive.
The Sézane Gaspard jumper runs pretty much true to size. I tried this on at the store last year in a size up, thinking that I’d want it baggier, but I didn’t love how that looked. I’m all for an oversized fit, but this particular cardigan looks better fitted–or at least it did on me anyway. I felt like it looked a little lumpy and frumpy in the larger size.
After spending a few days styling this sweater, I have found that it works best as a standalone top or over a thin t-shirt or tank top. One good thing about wearing this style more fitted is that it’s easier to layer over it. For example, this looks SO CUTE buttoned all the way up under a blazer or leather jacket.
The arms were a tiny bit tight when I first put it on, but they loosened up with wear this week.
Sézane currently carries the Gaspard cardigan in a whopping 17 colorways–this is why it was so hard for me to choose! The Sea Bright Green, a bold emerald, is the color featured in all of these photos, but I also have my eye on the Red for this coming fall and winter. Swoon!
Here are all of the colors that the Gaspard comes in: Black, Sage, Camel, Ecru/Gold stripes, Mottled Grey, Ecru, Navy, Vintage Blue, Red, Light Beige, Navy/Ecru stripes, Sea Green, Rosewood, Royal Blue, Sea Bright Green, Powder Pink, and Pastel Violet.
The instructions say to hand wash only. There’s no way I’ll be doing that, so I’ll update this review after I’ve washed it on a cold, delicate cycle and lay flat to dry!
The Sézane Gaspard cardigan costs $120. Sézane offers free shipping on orders over $200 and has a fairly easy (and free) returns process.
One thing to note: Sézane’s in-store prices in Europe are significantly lower than in the US or online. If you’re planning a trip to Paris this summer or fall, I suggest leaving room in your suitcase!
In comparing this price to other similar non-cashmere cardigans from other mid-range brands similar to Sézane, I’d say the $120 falls pretty squarely in the middle of the pack. Reformation, Anthropologie, J. Crew, and Madewell all carry similar (but not as elegant) pieces around the same price point, although you can usually catch Anthro, J. Crew, or Madewell on a sale day and get a bit lower.
And, not surprisingly, Quince carries a $69 fitted cashmere cardigan that would achieve a very similar look.
What I love most about this sweater is the details. The mother-of-pearl buttons, elegant boat neck, and fine knit material all make this piece so special and unique when comparing it to other cardigans on the market around the same price.
I also find it incredibly versatile. You can see below that I’ve dressed it up, down, and in a million different fashions. I love that this sweater can either stand alone as a shirt OR act as a layering piece with almost any style of outfit. I foresee myself wearing the Gaspard Cardigan all fall and winter long.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sézane shines in the staples. This brand launches a bunch of new/limited items each month, but I personally find their best, highest quality pieces are their top 30 “French Heroes.” These are chic, timeless basics, many of which are now the backbone of my wardrobe. (See the rest of my Sézane reviews here).
Sézane carries another very similar sweater to the Gaspard called the Barry cardigan. The two styles are alike in almost every way except the neckline. The Barry has a deep v-neck style as opposed to the high-neck subtle boat style of the Gaspard. The Barry is also beautiful but slightly less versatile, in my opinion. That said, the neckline is stunning and would make this a gorgeous top, to pair with wide leg jeans or trousers this winter. The color offering is slightly different than that of the Gaspard. My favorite Barry color is either the candy pink or light blue.
